Female Hair Loss – The Causes and Potential Cures

As troubling as hair loss or baldness can be for a man, it’s far more upsetting for a woman to experience any form of hair loss. Men are expected to lose their hair at some stage in their life, but a woman’s hair is her crown of glory. A woman experiencing hair loss or baldness tends to stand out in a crowd.

Hair loss or baldness is always unfair, but just seems more unfair that a woman should suffer from it.

Female hair loss can be caused by the same disorders that cause male hair loss. Women can suffer from androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, same as men do, but this is rare. Other more likely causes of female hair loss are stress, anxiety, chemical processing, oral contraception, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, menopause PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and traction alopecia (pulling the hair out).

Hormonal imbalance is the most common cause of female hair loss that is often due to an imbalance in the amount of estrogen in their system.

You must be wondering what causes a hormonal imbalance that leads to female baldness. The most common causes are oral contraceptives, PCOS, menopause and pregnancy in the postnatal stages. All of these directly affect a woman’s hormonal balance, and this can lead to partial or dramatic thinning or loss of hair. Your doctor is the best person to speak to about PCOS, menopause and oral contraception. He or she can also advise on how to deal with female baldness.

It’s common for women who have just given birth to experience some loss of hair. This is due to a woman’s estrogen levels spiking during pregnancy, then dropping considerably once the baby is born. In stages, the estrogen increase causes hair to become very thick, then it thins considerably once the extra estrogen leaves the new mother’s system.

Severe stress can also cause female hair loss, and it can also be caused by pulling hair too tightly in a pony tail (traction areata). In all cases, it can appear as just a minor thinning or lead to extreme hair loss. The pressure that some women put on their hair when tying it up is so great they actually pull their hair out. Fortunately, this type of hair loss is temporary.

An overlooked cause of female hair loss is due to chemical treatments used during hairstyling. Using dyes and heat constantly may cause hair damage and loss over time. Fortunately, this type of female hair loss is reversible by stopping chemical treatments and just waiting for hair to grow back.

Topical treatments available for women suffering from hair loss are rogaine for women, saw palmetto-based natural treatments and aromatherapy treatments. Women who have suffered long term and devastating hair loss have the option of using a hair replacement system to regain their confidence and appearance. Most companies that assist men with hair loss are happy to welcome women as clients also.
