Rogaine, Regaine and Minoxidil – Wonder Drug?

Almost everyone who is losing their hair is familiar with the name rogaine. This hair regrowth product has become a household name for people who need to stop their hair loss. rogaine is the product your doctor or a trichologist (a hair loss specialist) is most likely going to recommend for treating hair loss.

rogaine was originally called Loniten, and it was originally a drug being developed in the laboratory to treat high blood pressure. In the course of clinical trials, researchers noticed that some of their patients began to grow hair where they’d been bald for years, and further research established rogaine as a product that is proven to regrow hair. Rogaine is a product that contains minoxidil as an active ingredient to regrow hair.

Once word got out that blood pressure pills made hair regrow, men all over the world began crushing Loniten blood pressure pills, mixing them with alcohol and rubbing them into their head in the hopes of regrowing their hair. Loniten was renamed Regaine for hair growth, and was first offered for sale in Europe.

When it was first released as a hair regrowth drug, minoxidil was sold as prescription-only, and it was expensive – a bottle of Rogaine cost over $100 for a one-month supply. Now minoxidil is available for sale online and you can buy it without a prescription.

You can buy Rogaine solution in several strengths: 2%, 5%, 10% and 15%. The heavy-duty 15% minoxidil solution is by far the strongest and most effective. A limitation for Rogaine users in the past was their hair got in the way before the medicine reached their scalp, and then it had to be rubbed in to be effective. Rogaine Foam offers a solution to that problem, and so far the results have been promising.

How Well Does Rogaine Work?

Rogaine has been medically proven to actually regrow hair, but you may be wondering how well it really works. Nobody knows for sure how Rogaine, or any other drug, will work on them because it depends on the individual patient.

You should expect to use Rogaine for 90+ days before the results become apparent. This is because hair takes a long time to grow back, and there is no way to rush nature. You should be aware that Rogaine can cause extra hair appear on your comb when you begin using it. This is normal shedding, and part of the regrowth process, as your missing hair begins the process of growing back. Rogaine just sped up the shedding process, and new hair will eventually grow in that space for keeps.

Treating hair loss with Rogaine is also an ongoing process. You have to keep using it to keep regrown hair in place. If you stop using Rogaine, the new regrowth will fall out in six months to two years.

Rogaine Side Effects

Like other medicines, Rgaine has side effects you should be aware of. Here is a list of the most common Rogaine side effects:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pains

Rogaine is available without a prescription, but it’s best to consult with your doctor if you have any health issues or are taking any other medications before you begin using Rogaine.
